I wonder if ghosts, or the belief in ghosts serves a similar purpose to religion in a perhaps a more secular way, like a kind of ancestor worship. Perhaps differing in religion in the constant search for proof of existence, and a lack of faith as a cornerstone.
Ghosts, and ghost-hunting or interaction with the dead, is an interesting meeting point between belief and science, or belief and technology. It is where proof is only sometimes sought, and fictions only sometimes ignored, but for all it’s blurred boundaries it is an active space. A place where things happen, where things appear, where experiences are sought, anxiety is asked for, beliefs are questioned, liminality re-evaluated, and new technologies embraced.
Where a sceptic is as valued as those of faith, and both sides welcome new technological tools to measure, test and create new platforms for contact.
